The Hanover Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the building at 360 Washington Street on December 9, 2009. The initial report to dispatchers was that smoke was coming from a clothes dryer and that the appliance had been unplugged. Prior to arrival dispatchers received a fire alarm reporting a water flow from the sprinkler system at the address.
First arriving companies found light smoke coming from a second floor window. School staff members reported that all 10 students and four staff members had evacuated the building and were accounted for. Firefighters found the fire in the second floor laundry room. The sprinkler system had been activated and the fire was now confined to the interior of the appliance. Firefighters used a handline to extinguish the fire inside the dryer. After the fire was extinquished, firefighters helped staff relocate students to temporary housing.
The building sustained significant smoke and water damage. Had the sprinkler system not been present, the fire would have quickly spread to other rooms and the attic resulting if a far greater damage to the structure and contents.

On Friday May 8th, a diesel fuel tank on a delivery truck was punctured by a piece of road debris. Thirty to fifty gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway. Fast work by Hanover Police, Fire and DPW prevented the situation from causing significant environmental damage. Hanover Police quickly diverted traffic away from the spill. The crew on Rescue 1 used two 5 gallon pails of speedy dry to construct a dam and keep the spill from reaching a storm drain that emptied into a nearby brook. They then set up a portable collection tank to capture the remaining fuel as it leaked from the tank. The Hanover DPW responded with a truck load of sand to fortify the dam. An environmental cleanup company was called in to removed the product, contaminated "speedy dry" and sand from the road.
